What do the Canpar surcharges mean?

Tire Demand Surcharge
A seasonal surcharge of $20 per piece applies to tires during the 2026 peak period. This commodity-specific charge may apply in addition to Canpar’s generally applicable Extra Care fees.

Extra Care
May apply to items that are not properly packaged for standard handling because of their size, shape, contents, or other characteristics.

Examples can include:

  • pails and containers
  • tires
  • ball bearings, nuts, bolts, and fasteners
  • liquids
  • wooden or metal crates
  • non-conveyable items

Over Length
Applies to a package where:

  • a single dimension exceeds 48 in (122 cm), or
  • two dimensions exceed 32 in (82 cm).

Overweight
Applies to a package or article with an actual weight greater than 70 lb (32 kg).

Oversize
Applies when:

  • length plus girth exceeds 130 in (330 cm), or
  • a single dimension exceeds 96 in (244 cm).

Canpar defines length as the longest side of the package. Girth is the distance around the two smallest sides and is calculated as 2 × (width + height).

Over Maximum Size or Weight
Applies when a package exceeds any one of Canpar’s maximum limits:

  • any single side is over 108 in (274 cm)
  • actual weight is over 150 lb (68 kg)
  • length plus girth exceeds 165 in (419 cm)

What about residential peak surcharges?

From October 30, 2026 through January 18, 2027, Canpar may apply a $2.00 Residential Demand Surcharge per shipment.

Canpar’s published criteria state that the surcharge may apply to customers shipping more than 2,000 residential shipments per business day or 10,000 residential shipments per week during November or December 2026. The charge applies only to volume exceeding 200% of the customer’s weekly average, measured between May 31 and June 28, 2026, where Canpar did not provide express written consent for the increase.
