What Is an HS Code?
An HS Code, or Harmonized System Code, is used to classify products being shipped internationally.
Customs authorities use HS Codes to identify the type of goods being imported or exported and to help determine applicable duties, taxes, and other regulatory requirements.
Using the correct HS Code helps support accurate customs documentation and can reduce the risk of delays during clearance.
How does ShipTime help with HS Codes?
When creating an international shipment in ShipTime, enter a clear and accurate product description in the international shipment details.
ShipTime can then automatically generate an HS Code based on the product description you provide.

The HS Code suggestion is powered by Zonos.
What should I enter as the product description?
Use a specific description that clearly explains what the item is.
For example, avoid vague descriptions such as:
- parts
- gift
- sample
- accessories
Instead, use a more detailed description, such as:
- stainless steel marine fitting
- cotton T-shirt
- ceramic coffee mug
- aluminum bicycle component
The more specific the description, the better the system can classify the product.
Can I save products and HS Codes for future shipments?
Yes. You can save commonly shipped products in your Product Library so they can be reused when creating future shipments.
To manage your saved products:
- Go to Settings in your ShipTime account.
- Select Products.
- Add or manage the products you ship regularly.

Using the Product Library can make international shipment creation faster and help you maintain consistent product information.
Why are HS Codes important?
HS Codes help with:
- Customs classification: Identifying the type of goods being shipped.
- Duties and taxes: Helping determine the charges that may apply when goods are imported.
- Customs documentation: Providing the classification required for international shipment documents.
- Customs clearance: Helping customs authorities process and review the shipment.
Do I need to review the generated HS Code?
Yes. The automatically generated HS Code is intended to help simplify the classification process, but you should review the suggested code and make sure it accurately represents the product being shipped.
If you already know the correct HS Code for your product, use the appropriate classification for your shipment.
