What Is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight is a pricing method couriers use to account for the amount of space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight.

For many shipments, the courier compares the package’s actual weight with its dimensional weight and charges based on whichever is greater.

When does dimensional weight apply?

Dimensional weight most commonly affects larger, lightweight packages.

For example, a large box containing a light item may take up significant space in a courier vehicle even though the package itself does not weigh very much. Dimensional weight helps couriers account for that space when calculating shipping charges.

How does ShipTime calculate dimensional weight?

ShipTime calculates dimensional weight automatically when you enter the package dimensions and weight while creating a quote or shipment.

To receive the most accurate rate, make sure you enter:

  • the correct length
  • the correct width
  • the correct height
  • the correct actual weight

You do not need to calculate dimensional weight manually when using ShipTime.

How is dimensional weight calculated?

The general formula is:

Length × Width × Height ÷ dimensional divisor

The dimensional divisor varies by courier and service.

Courier-specific dimensional divisors

The following divisors are currently used for these services:

  • DHL: 139
  • Canada Post: 139
  • Canpar: 139.4
  • Canpar Select: 115.2
  • GLS: 166
  • Purolator Ground: 139.4
  • Purolator Air: 115.2
  • Loomis: 139.4
  • UPS: 139

ShipTime applies the appropriate dimensional-weight calculation automatically when generating your available rates.

Why is dimensional weight important?

Dimensional weight can affect the final shipping charge, particularly for packages that are large relative to their actual weight.

Entering accurate dimensions is important because incorrect measurements can result in:

  • inaccurate quotes
  • carrier adjustments
  • additional shipping charges after the shipment has been processed

Why might the weight on my shipping label look different?

Some couriers may display the dimensional weight on the shipping label instead of the package’s actual physical weight.

This does not necessarily mean the shipment information was entered incorrectly. It may reflect the courier’s preferred label format or the billable weight being used for the shipment.
