How Do I Specify That Items Are Not for Sale or Resale?
When creating an international shipment, it’s important to choose the correct Reason for Shipment so the shipment is described accurately for customs purposes.
If the items are not being sold or resold, select the option that best matches the purpose of the shipment.
How do I choose the reason for shipment?
- Start creating your shipment in ShipTime.
- Continue to the International Details step.
- Find the Additional Details section.
- Open the Reason for Shipment dropdown.
- Select the option that best describes the shipment.
For items that are not intended for sale or resale, Personal - Not for Resale may be the appropriate option.
Other available reasons may include:
- Commercial
- Gift
- Sample
- Personal - Not for Resale
- Return and Repair

Which option should I choose?
Choose the reason that most accurately reflects why the goods are being shipped.
For example:
- Commercial: goods being sold or used for commercial purposes
- Gift: goods being sent as a genuine gift
- Sample: goods being provided as a sample
- Personal - Not for Resale: personal items that are not being sold
- Return and Repair: goods being returned or sent for repair
Selecting a reason for shipment does not automatically determine whether duties, taxes, or other import charges will apply. Customs authorities may still assess the shipment based on the goods, value, origin, destination, and applicable regulations.
Why does the reason for shipment matter?
The reason for shipment forms part of the customs information provided for an international shipment.
Providing accurate information can help reduce customs delays and ensure the shipment documentation reflects the actual purpose of the goods.
